Informatics Research Group

The Informatics Research Group focus on discovering, understanding, creating, processing, evaluating and deployment of, information and knowledge based systems in multi-disciplinary environment. The group has close link with industry and it has strong orientation on the following application domains:

• Semantic Web (specifically Ontology and Knowledge Engineering).
• Security including Identity and Trust Management.
• Grid Computing and NGN (Next Generation of Networks).
• Bio-Informatics.
• Web Services and SOA.

Informatics Research Group consists of 8 academic members of staff and 4 Researchers and 9 PhD students.

Dr. Paul Crowther

I am a Principal Lecturer and the Subject Leader of the Information Systems Subject Group at Sheffield Hallam University. My teaching areas are object oriented systems analysis and design, knowledge management, database design and object relational database implementation and administration. My research in the past has involved knowledge acquisition from images and development of intelligent systems, particularly those involving images. Recently I have become involved in agent based technologies, ontologies and knowledge management. I developed the use case models which link to the requirements database in the EU Framework V MOBIlearn (http://www.mobilearn.org/) project.

My research interests are centred on Data Mining, ...an automated process of extracting knowledge from large databases by way of discovering and modelling inherent patterns. In particular, I work towards the enhancement of clustering and classification algorithms. In recent years I have worked under close supervision of Professor J. T. Kent and Dr. C. C. Taylor.
